Testing New Wordpress Features

Posted by Virtual Kristi on Apr 05 2009 | Cats, General

Last month I finally took the plunge and uploaded the newer version of Wordpress. I noticed today that the photo features have been enhanced greatly so now I’m going to test them out using this post.

Test 1

Image Test - my beautiful Kitty-boy, Rajah

Well, it appears that all that’s improved is that the uploader is different, and that you can resize the photo using the uploader.  I was able to choose from several sizes – the one above is “medium.”  I thought that it was going to allow me to show a small image linked to a larger one without having to manually link to it, but not so.  Oh well.  It’s still a little easier I guess.

Next thing I need to do is try to alter my stylesheets a bit.  I seem to have lost a small bit of my formatting, like my background color, during the upgrade.  I’m also working on a new header image, so that will come later.  I’m creating a cool new “Virtual Knitter” logo that I hope to use in the future.

An Attempt at Catching Up!

Posted by Virtual Kristi on Mar 19 2008 | Cats, General, Knitting, Spinning

Well, my good intentions of keeping on top of my Blog have fallen by the wayside once again!  Anyway, lots of updates are long overdue, so I’ll attempt to catch up now.

First of all, I really owe everyone an update on www.virtualknitter.com.  As it stands now, I’ve come to the realization that I just can’t do as much as I had hoped with that site.  In typical Capricorn fashion, I set my ambitions very high!  But I’ve reached a point in my life where I’m wise enough to know that sometimes I have to scale back on what I’d like to do.  Since I’ve taken on some additional commitments that are very important to me, I’ve decided to just let VirtualKnitter.com evolve very slowly.  You might say it’s just incubating right now, and I’m not sure what form it will take upon final birth.  I do know that I am not going to pursue creating the worlds best guide to LYS and fiber arts related stores.  Why?  Well, simply because right after starting to gather info for my directly, I learned of a fantastic one that’s recently been published.  A directory pubplishing company has created a guide specific to LYS and has also created an online version.  I checked it out and found it to be very good, so there’s absoulutely no reason for me to pursue that endeavor.  My sole reason for wanting to do it anyway was because I hadn’t found any guides I liked.  Now that one exists, it just doesn’t make sense for me to try to create one too, especially given my limited resources and time.  I’ll track down the info for that site and post it here shortly.

You might wonder what other commitments are going to be taking up my time.  Well, specifically – WALKING!  I signed up for the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk taking place in September.  I’ll be doing a lot of walking in preparation for the event, when I’ll be walking 60 miles over 3 days to raise money for breast cancer research and detection.  Visit my personal page to learn more (and make a donation, if you’re so inclined.  I haven’t really personalized the page yet, and our team name is still a bit up in the air, but for now, we’re the Glamour Pirates.  My friends Barb and Naomi have signed up with me.  We each need to raise a minimum of $2200 in order to participate.  Having done oen of these before (in 2001), I’m hard pressed to say whether raising the money or training for the event is harder.  They’re both challenges, that’s for sure!  I did my first official “training walk” today – just a little 4-mile jaunt.  However, since I’ve been rather slug-like this winter when it comes to fitness, it was plenty long enough!

And in my fiber life, I’be been spinning away.  I continue to be very active in the Eastside Spinners.  I also took several spinning classes at the Madrona Fiber Arts Festival last weekend.  I ended up spending way too much in the market place – I’ll post some pictures later of the scruptious goodies I bought there.  Right now, I’m spinning a Merino Silk blend from Fleece Artist that I picked up at one booth.

Well, as usual, I have lots to do, so that’s all for now.  No pictures this time!  I’m breaking in a new computer (a wonderful little Tablet PC) and don’t have everything transfered over yet.  I’ll post more later in the week when I’m feeling a bit more organized.

Catching up – Mostly Knitting

Posted by Virtual Kristi on Aug 23 2007 | Cats, Knitting

Hello!  As they say, “Better late than never!”  Yup – it’s been a long time since my last post.  I started one when we got back from vacation but never finished it.  Rather than publish such old news, I just deleted it and am starting over.  As is often the case, summer has been a busy time for me so I’ve just not kept up with my blogging.  I always tell myself that I’ll do better, but that just never seems to happen.  One thing that happens to me is that I’ll often think “Oh, I should blog about this experience,” and then I start writing the blog in my head.  Well, as you might guess, since I’ve already written it out in my head, I’m bored with it later, and it never gets entered!  I guess I’ll just have to quit doing that!I’ve been working on a few knitting projects lately (nope – can’t stick to just one at a time, not this girl!)  A couple of them have deadlines so I’ll talk about those in this post.

The first one is John’s Birthday Sweater.  This is a sweater I started over a year ago for his birthday last year.  Well, now I’m aiming for having it finished this year for his birthday, which takes place in about 4 weeks!  I’m knitting it from Elann Peruvian Highland Wool in gray with black and red bands.  I’m following the “recipe” for a raglan sleeve sweater from the Anne Budd “Handy Book of Sweater Patterns,” which is working out well for me.  However, when I was originally working on this, I got  hung up on the sleeves because I decided to use them to work on one of my weaknesses – knitting with DPNs.  Looking back, I realize that this was not such a good idea on something so important.  I should have just stuck with the 2-circular method since I’m so at ease with it.  Since I had knit the body with my Denise needles, and I had to switch to bamboos for the sleeves, the guage was drastically different, so I had to keep starting over with different sizes.  And the ladders – they were just terrible when using the larger size DPNs.  Consequently, it got set aside and not touched for months.  But now I’m back at it and things are going well:

One thing that I had to figure out was whether or not I should try to match the bands on the arms to the bands on the sweater.  I finally figured out that it would be easier and most likely look better, to have the band pattern on the sleeves be different and not try to match them as that was going to be a losing battle.  Instead of having a wide band on the sleeves, I’ll have two narrow one, as shown, on the lower part and one narrow band on the upper part (I think – I may skip the upper one and just leave it all gray).

Another deadline driven project I have going is Evelyn Clark’s “Falling In Love” scarf knit in Malabrigo (how the heck do you pronounce that anyway) lace weight merino in the Amaroso colorway.  I just started this morning (I’m home with a headcold today, and knitting and blogging are about the only activities I can do without feeling overheated and feaverish).  So far I’ve completed one section of the “falling hearts” pattern, which is repeated several time before finishing each end with the “intertwined hearts” section.  This scarf is knit from the center back, so I had to do a provisional cast on for the first time ever, which was actually extremely easy (I say that now – we’ll see what happens when it’s time to start at the center back to knit the other side!)  Anyway, here’s a detail of my progress so far:

The Malabrigo is a “singles” yarn instead of a plied yarn, so ths pattern should work perfectly as it is a garter stich lace.  This yarn might have a tendency to bias in a stockinette pattern. I’m quite pleased with it so far.  The reason this is deadline driven is that in mid-September I’m taking a class in designing lace triangles, from the the lace queen herself – Evelyn Clark.  I thought that prior to taking the class, it might be a good idea to finish one of her patterns.  I already had this pattern on hand, having purchased it some time ago, I just had to find the right yarn for it.  I originally bought some red Misti Alpaca lace weight for it, but prior to staring, I found that my LYS, Hilltop Yarn East, had just gotten this wonderful yarn in stock.  I thought this red & pink colorway would be perfect for this pattern.  I may still knit one with the alpaca too as a gift (my mother would love it!)  This one’s going to be for me though.

As far as spinning goes, I took a dye class two weeks ago!  I learned how to paint roving as well as how to do a low water bath dye on the stovetop.  I really enjoyed the class and hope to incorporate the techniques learned into my own work.  I’ll post a picture of the yarn I’ve spun from the class roving when I get a chance.

And now for the obligatory cat picture.  Here’s Rajah, wearing a miniature Seattle Mariner’s hat:

Some Bengal Kitty Love

Posted by Virtual Kristi on Apr 19 2007 | Cats

Hello!  I’m way behind in posting anything crafty, and it may be a couple days before I get around to catching up.  So, instead, I’ve decided to post a lovely picture of my Big Bad Baby Boy Bengal, Rajah.  In the photo, he’s napping and using his “sister” Lily as a pillow.  So cute!  Anyway, enjoy!
