Turning Over a New Leaf

Posted by Virtual Kristi on May 06 2007 | Knitting

Hello! Yup – I’m finally getting around to adding a new entry to my Blog.  Not only have I been extremely busy with work and personal activities, but I’ve also been plagued with a series of computer challenges.  I’m still busy with work, but I think I’ve finally overcome the computer challenges (knock on wood) so I’m back to blogging.

I’ve not been doing much spinning for the last couple of weeks.  Instead, I’ve spent that time out in the yard doing a bit of yard work.  The photo below isn’t great, but it shows our front courtyard.  For the most part, it’s pretty low maintenance, but I have had to do a fair amount of cleanup and weeding to get it to the state it is now.  This is not a great picture, since it was taken from inside our living room, through the windows, but it is a fairly good representation of the yard.  In the back we have a more traditional suburban lawn.  We’ll be doing some major renovation back there later this year however.

As far as crafting goes, I’ve started on my first Knitty pattern!  I’ve been looking for a shrug or minimal sweater that will work over a cute Anne Taylor dress I have.  The fabric is a nice summer silk with blue and black flowers on a white background.  The dress is sleeveless and the way the weather is around here, I really need something to take with me when I wear it in case I get chilled (or if I want to wear it to work, where the air conditioning makes it too cool for no sleeves, in my opinion.)  When I perused the Spring issue of Knitty, I found the perfect pattern – Leaf:

I’m making “Leaf” out of some pretty blue yarn that I spun last year.  In fact, if you look back far enough on my blog you’ll find an entry where I asked for suggestions for a use for the yarn.  I still consider myself to be a “new” spinner even though I’ve been spinning for a little over a year now.  I’m still in the “experimentation” stage and don’t often end up with enough of any one spinning project to make a larger item like a sweater, so I’m pretty excited to be making a garment out of yarn that I spun myself!  Here’s a picture of my progress so far:

This is the project I plan on taking with me on our vacation to Disney World later this week, since I want to be able to wear it soon after we get back.  I may toss some cotton into my carry-on as well to work on some simple washcloths while we’re on the plane.  I need to make sure I have something mindless for the flight!  I’ll post some more pictures as I make progress on “Leaf.”
